The Northside Farmers Market 2010 season starts in May..…

One of the Northside’s favorite places to gather, the Northside Farmers Market, has opened for the 2010 season. Think of it as our own community crossroads, a place where neighbors can gather -- to shop for fresh local foods, to enjoy offerings from interesting cultural groups and artists, and to just say ‘Hi’ to friendly faces that you might not have seen since last season. This is the sixth season for the Northside Farmers Market and our maturity shows, we’ve doubled the number of vendors at the market with more on our waiting list. That many vendors means many choices for shoppers!

Join us for Breakfast with Santa - Dec 5

Committee members have been hard at work planning and preparing for the 7th annual event to be held Saturday, December 5 from 9am to 11am. Santa will be available for photos all morning.

Tickets are available at several northside locations, include the Esquire Club and Duwayne's Salon. TIcket prices this year are $6 for adults and $4 children.

Proceeds from this event will go to the three food pantries who are serving northside residents. They include St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Lakeview Lutheran and The River Food Pantry.

AppleFest 2009 - October 3

The North/Eastside Senior Coalition’s 9th Annual AppleFest will be held 3 October 2009 at the beautiful Warner Park Community Recreation Center (1625 Northport Drive, Madison). This intergenerational community event is fun for all ages! Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to enhance programs and services offered to senior adults and their families living in north/east Madison.

Kicking off the weekend (Thursday, 1 October) is the expanded Used Book Sale; running 4–7 pm, it will feature books, CDs, DVDs, and games. The book sale continues on Friday (2 October) for a full day, running 9 am–5 pm.

Saturday (3 October) offers entertainment for the entire family. Entrance for adults is $2 for the day; kids (under 12) are FREE. The day starts at 9:30 am and includes kid’s games with a moon bounce ($1), carnival with numerous games and prizes (50¢ each), popcorn & slushies ($1 each), face painting ($1), live zoo animals (10:30 am–12:30 pm), and appearances of Doodlebug the Clown and local mascots. A fire truck and police cruiser will also be parked outside periodically throughout the day.

A big thanks to everyone that made it to last night’s 15th anniversary dinner for NBA. The dining room was filled with over 70 members and guests which made for a very nice evening with lots of great conversations.

Summer Concert Series

The North/Eastside Senior Coalition is pleased to announce the schedule for the 2009 Summer Concert Series at Warner Park.

In its 16th year, NESCO presents six free, high quality musical concerts for senior adults on the north/eastside, their families, and other residents of the local and surrounding communities. One objective of the concerts is to increase the north/eastside’s access to cultural events and to expand their appreciation for different kinds of music. Another objective is to bring people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds together to enjoy each others company and appreciate a cultural event they would not otherwise be able to attend.

The concerts provide a unique and important opportunity to bring senior adults, who are otherwise isolated, together to socialize with people of all ages. NESCO’s annual summer concerts have truly become an “ARTS FOR ALL” event with families bringing their picnics, local agencies bringing their assisted living residents, and senior centers planning an excursion for their residents. The concerts take place in the beautiful Warner Park where the backdrop is trees, water, and grass.

Northside Pride - Buy Northside!

The Northside News will be running a special Buy Northside insert in the April/May issue. In addition, a poster will be distributed to participating businesses. The Northside News goes to 13,000 homes and business on the northside. For as little as $30 you can show your pride in being a Northside business owner!

The purpose in doing this - A recently-completed City of Madison market study for the Northside showed that about 50% of Northside buying power is not being captured by Northside businesses and is “leaking” elsewhere.

Roth Family sells Northgate to the Alexander Company

Randy Alexander has purchased Northgate Shopping Center located on North Sherman Avenue on Madison’s Northeast side.

In 1831, Johann Baptist Roth, wife Maria, and son Matthias immigrated to the United States from Breisach, Germany. They settled on a farm in Roxbury, Wisconsin. Johann was a potter by trade.

Son Matthias married and moved to a farm on Sherman Avenue, across from what is now Sherman School. Matthias’ oldest son, John Stephan, worked very hard for his father while receiving no payment. A neighbor, H. Johnson, gave John a large tract of land at no cost. He sold the land to the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and also land west of that to the Lakewood Company in 1911. John’s land bordered Steensland Drive, Aberg Avenue to the now Oscar Mayer plant and both sides of Roth Street to the railroad tracks.

John had a dairy farm. His two sons, Carl and Paul, walked from the farm home off Steensland to Holy Redeemer School on State Street. Carl and Paul each had milk routes, driven by horse and wagon, into the central city of Madison. He also had a gravel pit on the site of where Northgate now stands.

In 1920, Carl and Paul started a coal and oil delivery business, a cement block plant, and a ready mix concrete plant with a fleet of trucks. Their office was on Roth Street. Later, they formed the C.E. and P.A. Roth Company. Carl’s son, William, and Paul’s sons, Phil and Tom, joined their fathers to run the company.

In 1960, the Roth’s built Northgate on Sherman Avenue. Some of the original stores were: a 24-lane bowling center, Poole’s Supper Club, Woolworth Dime Store, Druck’s Apparel (later Borman’s), Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream, National Tea Grocery Store, Gerhardt Pharmacy, Borcher’s Liquor Store, Harold’s Shoe Store, Main Appliance and Northwest Fabrics Store.

Northgate has always been managed by the Roth family: Bill, Tom, Phil, all deceased, and John. The present board is Blanche Roth, widow of Bill, and current manager, John Roth, Bob Joha, husband of Mary Frances Roth Joha, Patty Roth Carroll, representing Phil’s family, and Joan Roth, widow of Tom.

Traffic Task Force needs NBA members

The joint NPC/NBA Northside Transportation and Safety meeting will take on Tuesday, December 16 at 7 pm at the NPC office (2702 International Lane, Suite 203)

The goal is to build a working relationship between the interested parties and find the common ground between the two groups, and decide where we want to focus our short and long-term efforts as it pertains to traffic safety and northside transportation into the future.

Nov 20 - Northside Plan Steering Committee Public Input Meeting: NPC/NBA joint presentation to Northside Steering Committee on forum results – discussed traffic safety issues, Hwy 113, Sherman, Packers, etc. Tim Carlisle of NPC, presented the objective results from our co-hosted community forum held Oct 29. Rylee added comments on behalf on the NBA that included support of the continuation of 4 lanes on Sherman. Lisa Wiese commented on behalf of the NPC. In addition, several business owners (some NBA members) expressed their concerns about changing Sherman Ave to two lanes.
Dec 13 – Northside Plan Steering Committee Open House: Preliminary draft recommendations from Northside Plan Steering Committee to be made public.
Dec 16 – NPC/NBA Traffic Taskforce Meeting: Review & plan a response to the preliminary draft recommendations that the Steering Committee will have presented at their Dec. 13th Open House.

Aberg at East Wash Ramp Expansion

In early to mid January of 2009 construction is anticipated to begin on the temporary widening of the inbound East Washington Avenue bridges over STH 30. General project construction is anticipated to start mid March of 2009 and is expected to continue until December of 2009. Permanent pavement marking and landscaping will be completed in the spring of 2010.

Construction began on the East Washington Ave corridor in 2004 and four segments of the reconstruction have been completed. This year's project includes work on East Washington Avenue from Marquette Street to Pinecrest Drive and on STH 30 from McCormick Ave to the RR track east of Fair Oaks Avenue. The project includes work on Commercial Avenue (STH 30 Frontage Roads) and the ramps at Fair Oaks Avenue. The project will reconstruct all the ramps at the East Washington Ave and STH 30 interchange. The project will also close the McCormick Ave connection to Aberg Ave.

Currently, motorists are not able to travel from west bound STH 30 to east bound East Washington Ave or east bound Aberg Ave to west bound East Washington Ave. One of the major goals of the project is to reconfigure the East Washington Avenue and STH 30 interchange to provide for all turning movements. The project involves the reconstruction of storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, some private utilities, concrete pavement, decorative street lighting, and landscaping. In addition, the project includes a new bridge on East Washington Avenue over STH 30.

The purpose of the forum was to provide an opportunity to gather business and community input on Northside economic development issues, with particular focus on issues related to improving the Northside business climate.

Attendance included about 30 community members including several business owners. It summarizes the priority strengths/opportunities, threats/barriers and solutions/strategies identified by multiple small groups, followed by issues identified by only one group. This is a very early planning document and may help us as we develop the purpose of the Northside economic task force.

Northside Traffic Forum Results

The Northside Planning Council, Northside Business Association and Ald. Satya Rhodes-Conway held a community forum on Northside transportation and traffic safety issues on October 29, 2008.

The purpose of the forum was to provide an opportunity to gather community input on Northsiders’ concerns and ideas about what we need to do to make the Northside’s major traffic corridors safer and better for businesses and all users –vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. Particular focus was given to N. Sherman Avenue due to its recent reconstruction and the volume of constituent calls received about the street.

A broad mix of approximately 55 Northside residents and business owners attended this interactive forum.

What's happening with the economy?

Northgate to get a facelift

NBA Member Carol Zamzow, CAZAM Training and Placement is offering a QuickBooks class. It is being taught by an accountant who is certified in QuickBooks.

The class is eight sessions from 8:30AM to 12:30PM Tuesday and Thursday the total of 32 hours. The start date is September 16. The cost of the class is $608.00. The cost for NBA members is $304.00. This is a perfect class it is small and more individual attention.

NBA Monthly Meetings get underway

The first general meeting of year begins next Tuesday - September 16. And this year, we'll be celebrating 15 years as an business organization!

At this month's meeting, we'd like to hear from the members. The board has put together a list of topics and speakers for this year, We'll share that at the meeting and would appreciate any feedback. Is there a topic you'd like to learn more about? Let us know what's working, what needs some tweaking. This is your group - help us get the info you want and need!

Annual renewals for membership are due now and are $135 before October 15. You should have received an invoice in the mail recently. After October 15, the membership fee rises to $150. If you didn't receive an invoice - let us know.

Meikle's True Value - new store opening

Preparations for Breakfast with Santa have begun

While Christmas decorations lining the store shelves in September may be a bit much. It's not too early to for NBA members to get ready for the annual Breakfast with Santa. It will be held on the morning of Saturday, December 6.

As in past years, the proceeds for the event are donated to northside food pantries including the River Food Pantry and the Lakeview Lutheran Church . Last year, we raised almost $1,000 during the three-hour, snowstorm-filled morning.

This year we hope to accomplish a few more goals.

We'd like to increase the amount of tickets sold.
Spread the word further to local churches, neighborhood groups and businesses

Members will have an opportunity to purchase and or sell ticket bundels starting in October.

National Night Out - August 5

The northside precinct is sponsoring this year’s Madison Police Department “National Night Out” event Tuesday, Aug 5 at Warner Park.

This is the first time that the event in its 20 year history will be held on the northside. The events start at 6 p.m., and will include a bike rodeo at 6:30 p.m., face painting, the K-9 unit with canine officer Ivan and his partner, human officer Henry Wilson, motorcycle officers, mounted police on horseback, squad cars and fire engines.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is an opportunity for friends, neighbors and businesses to gather and learn more about personal safety and property security as well as build bridges between citizens, businesses and local law enforcement. MPD will provide information on home security, personal safety, and how to organize a Neighborhood Watch.

Northside Steering Committee needs volunteers

As you may know, The northside was selected by the Community Development Block Grant Commission is receiving planning services to update the 1992 northside neighborhood plan. A Steering Committee of 11 regular and 6 alternate members was appointed by the Mayor to conduct the update for the area north of Warner Park to Havey and Wheeler Roads. This process has been underway since January 2008.

Now, the committee is seeking additional members for the Committee that will focus on issues and strategies for the area south of Warner Park to Commercial Avenue. They are looking for additional members from the area shown below in red dots to join the ongoing planning process. Send NBA an email for more details.

Prospective candidates for Wisconsin’s fall elections have until July 8 to declare they're running.

According to the website Wispolitics.com, the most crowded primary has attracted six Democratic candidates to the 81st Assembly District, where Dave Travis, D-Waunakee has served for 30 years. The heavily Dem district in northwestern Dane County has yet to attract a Republican to run, so the primary winner could cruise unopposed to a first-term Assembly win.

City to redo Zoning Codes

Madison – The City of Madison is beginning a major effort to completely rewrite its zoning code and prepare a new zoning map.

“Madison’s zoning code is the blueprint for how we physically define our city,” said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. “Updating the zoning code is an important part of our attempt to help Madison grow in a way that doesn’t threaten the qualities that make us a desirable community in the first place. Input from Madisonians into this process will help us shape our community for decades to come.”

As part of the Zoning Code Rewrite project, three community meetings will be held:

Monday, May 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the Overture Center for the Arts, Wisconsin Studio, 201 State Street;
Wednesday, May 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center, Community Rooms 1, 2, 3, 1625 Northport Drive, and
Wednesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the MGE Innovation Center, Conference Room 50 A-D, 510 Charmany Drive (University of Wisconsin Research Park).

The zoning code is one of the primary tools the City of Madison uses to regulate development. All existing and new development in the City must be consistent with the requirements of the zoning code. These requirements range from the types of development allowed on a property, to building setbacks from the street and adjacent properties, to the amount of parking required on a site.

The current zoning code dates from 1966 and it does not always reflect best zoning and community planning practices. Further, the zoning code has been amended many times and it is often confusing and difficult to use. Finally, the zoning code is not always effective in implementing the recommendations of Madison’s adopted Comprehensive Plan, neighborhood and special area plans. The new and improved zoning code will be easier to use and understand, and it will better enable the City to implement its various plans.

Sherman Avenue Resurfacing

On Wednesday night (March 12) City Alder Satya Rhodes-Conway held a listening session for residents and businesses interested in learning the details of the planned resurfacing on Sherman Avenue, slated to begin June 30. As promised, the start date has been scheduled for after the annual Rhythm and Booms.

The plan is to resurface Sherman Ave from the rail road tracks (south of the Esquire Club) north to to Windom Way (Near Ryan Funeral Home). The general consensus is the project will take 4-5 months with an anticipated end date of October 15.

Also present at the listening session were several city engineers and other staff who explained in great detail the scope of the project, lane closures and closed roads. All city staff present expressed great concern for business owners and the inconvenience this will cause. All attempts will be make to keep one access driveway open to businesses at all times.

Northside Easter Egg Hunt - March 22

Once again, NBA will provide the Easter eggs for the Northside Community Council’s annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 22 at Warner park. Each year around 400 children come to hunt Easter eggs, win prizes and visit with the Easter Bunny.

The year the Council is asking for additional donations of prizes, cash and volunteer time. If you’d like to volunteer – please call Rosie at 244-0444.

Breakfast with Santa nets $900 for area food pantries

With a major snowstorm hitting the northside on December 1, just as the pancakes were going on the griddle….NBA was still able to raise $900 during our annual breakfast with Santa fundraiser. The money was divided equally and provided to the River Food Pantry and the Lakeview Food Pantry. Volunteers reported the pancakes were the best yet!
